The president of the Galician Government, Alfonso Rueda, has announced the approval of the Galician plan for assisted human reproduction 2024-2028, an ambitious measure that positions Galicia as the community with the widest portfolio of reproduction services in Spain. Equipped with The plan, worth 7.84 million euros, is a key commitment of the current legislature, designed to increase the number of beneficiaries of treatments in the public health system. Currently, it is estimated that 151% of couples require assisted reproduction treatments to conceive.
The plan introduces important innovations, such as the progressive extension of the maximum age for access to techniques such as artificial insemination and in vitro fertilisation, from the current 40 years to 45 in 2028. It also includes the possibility of egg freezing for women with certain pathologies and, for the first time, for healthy women aged 30 to 35 who wish to postpone motherhood.
The regional health minister, Antonio Gómez Caamaño, said that a first consultation will be guaranteed within 60 days and access to treatment in less than six months. In addition, from December, oocyte preservation will be offered to women with risks such as endometriosis and trans men.
This effort involves a reinforcement of personnel and resources: The Xunta will allocate more than 5 million euros to double the current staff of assisted reproduction units and 1.7 million euros in equipment and adaptations in hospitalsGynecologists, embryologists and nursing staff, among others, will be added to improve the service and patient experience.
With this plan, Galicia is making progress in its commitment to promoting birth rates and supporting families, thereby contributing to demographic revitalization and strengthening the public reproductive health offer.
