The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, Diana Morant, has signed the agreement between the Government, the Community of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Madrid for the creation of the cNational Neurotechnology Centre (Spain Neurotech) Partnership. The project will have a Spanish Government investment of 120 million euros.
Morant stressed that “Spain Neurotech will be one of the 5 centres in the world specialising in the development of technological tools based on the fundamentals of the human brain.” The minister assured that this centre “is born as a world reference in the research and development of studies and technologies around brain activity.”
A world leader in neurotechnology
The minister stressed that the neurotechnology center will be key to improving people's health and quality of life. The project will promote advanced diagnostics and therapies for the Alzheimer, he Parkinson, disorders of the autism spectrum, the depression and the sleep disorders.
Financing and signing of the agreement
The Government of Spain will finance 60% of the project, equivalent to 72 million euros. The first investment will be 40 million euros from the signing of the agreement. The rest, 80 million euros, will be invested between 2026 and 2037.
The Community of Madrid will contribute to the 39%, that is to say, 78 million eurosThe Autonomous University of Madrid will provide the 1% remaining, 2 million euros.
The agreement was signed by Emilio Viciana, Education Councilor of the Community of Madrid, and Amaya Mendikoetxea, rector of the Autonomous University. Also present were the Minister of Digital Transformation, Oscar Lopez, and the Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martin.
A boost to scientific and technological research
Morant stressed that Spain Neurotech joins other organizations that reinforce Spain's scientific leadership. He mentioned the new Spanish Space Agency in Seville, the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence in A Coruña and the IFMIF-DONES in Granada.
These projects, according to the minister, are key to creating a public network of excellence in disruptive areas. This network will generate wealth and opportunities for all citizens.
"We are creating a new brand-Spain," said Morant. A brand that advances cohesively through the science and innovation.
Commitment to the Community of Madrid
The minister highlighted the Government's support for the Community of Madrid. He mentioned the Maria Goyri Program, which will incorporate more than thousand teachers in Madrid's public universities. The program represents an investment of 170 million euros in six years.
In recent weeks, the Government signed two key agreements with the Community of Madrid. The first was to Spain Neurotech and the second for the Maria Goyri Program. Total investment reaches 300 million euros"This is the way forward," Morant said.
Investment in R&D in the Community of Madrid
Morant highlighted that, since 2018, the Government has invested 1.1 billion euros annual research and development (R&D) in the Community of Madrid. This investment has been key to consolidating the region as a scientific innovation hub.
