Did you use Skinoren and want its equivalent in Spain?

Skinoren is a brand of azelaic acid. In Spain, alternatives with the same active ingredient include Zeliderm 20% cream (available without a prescription) and Finacea 15% gel (available with a prescription).

If you knew it as Skinoren in your country and you do not see it here under that name, what you need to look for is the active ingredient, azelaic acid. In Spain it is sold, among other options, as Zeliderm 20% cream, available without a prescription for acne vulgaris, and as Finacea 15% gel, which requires a prescription for papulopustular facial acne and for papulopustular rosacea.

What should you ask for at the pharmacy if your treatment was Skinoren?

Ask for azelaic acid and describe your goal. If you're looking to treat typical acne breakouts, you can ask for a cream containing 20%, such as Zeliderm. If your main problem is inflamed pimples with redness and sensitivity consistent with rosacea, or inflammatory acne that requires monitoring, you'll usually be referred to Finacea 15% gel and a medical evaluation to adjust the treatment.

Is Zeliderm 20% available without a prescription, and what is it used for?

Yes, Zeliderm 20% is available without a prescription in Spain and is indicated for the local treatment of the symptoms of acne vulgaris. If your condition worsens or does not improve after one month of use, you should consult a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and determine if you need a different approach or combination therapy.

When do you need a prescription for azelaic acid?

You need a prescription for Finacea 15% gel. It is indicated for the relief of mild to moderate papulopustular acne of the face and for the topical treatment of papulopustular rosacea. If you suspect rosacea, have persistent flare-ups, or experience significant burning, it's best not to improvise and seek medical advice, as the treatment plan usually includes skin barrier care and sometimes other medications.

How to use azelaic acid without irritation and when to seek help?

With Zeliderm, the package insert recommends starting with one application daily and increasing to two per day if tolerated. With Finacea, the usual regimen is twice daily, although if irritation occurs, the frequency can be temporarily reduced as indicated in the package insert and by your doctor. In both cases, apply a thin layer, avoid the eyes and mucous membranes, and wash your hands afterward.

If severe irritation occurs, worsens, or does not improve within the timeframe indicated in the leaflet, consult your pharmacist or doctor. For safe use, always check the official leaflet of the product you purchase and follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have highly reactive skin.
