Daivobet is a prescription ointment available in Spain that combines calcipotriol, a vitamin Dderivative, and betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid. It is used in adults for stable plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, and the patient leaflet notes that most people see obvious improvement after about two weeks.
What two active ingredients does Daivobet contain?
It contains calcipotriol, which helps normalize the skin's growth rate, and betamethasone dipropionate, which reduces inflammation and itching. The combination aims to control plaque with less redness and scaling, but because it contains a potent corticosteroid, it's important to adhere to the recommended treatment time and dosage.
The usual treatment is to apply a thin layer to the affected areas once a day for an initial 4-week course, without covering the area with bandages. Afterward, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid accidental contact with your face, mouth, or eyes, and avoid showering or bathing immediately after application. Do not use Daivobet on your face or genitals, and consult a doctor first if there are any wounds or signs of infection in the area.
How does it work to slow down plaque psoriasis?
It works in two ways, slowing down excessive skin growth and reducing some of the local inflammation. Simply put, calcipotriol helps skin cells mature more evenly, and betamethasone reduces inflammation and itching. In practice, this usually results in thinner, less red patches over time, although it may take longer for the skin to appear completely clear.
If you need to continue treatment beyond those 4 weeks, it's advisable to consult your doctor, as you shouldn't use more than 15 grams per day and it's not recommended to treat more than 30% of your total body surface area. During treatment, limit excessive exposure to the sun or artificial light, and report any blurred vision or other visual changes.
If what you have looks more like an eczema rash than a psoriasis plaque, it's worth confirming this before continuing with a strong corticosteroid. For safe use, always follow your doctor's instructions and check the official Daivobet package insert, and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist for advice.
