What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is identified as the active ingredient in Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy, with differences in indication, presentation, and context of use that should be distinguished before looking for it in a pharmacy.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in medications such as Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. It is not a brand name, but rather a prescription substance used to treat type 2 diabetes or weight management, depending on the specific medication.

According to the EMA, semaglutide appears in medicines such as Ozempic and Rybelsus for type 2 diabetes and in Wegovy for weight management.

In which medications does semaglutide appear?

Semaglutide is present in Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. Ozempic and Wegovy are injectable forms, while Rybelsus is an oral tablet. All three share the same active ingredient, but they are not presented in the same form.

Their technical specifications and therapeutic objectives also change. Therefore, even if the name of the active ingredient is the same, it's not advisable to assume they all serve the same purpose or that they can be interchanged without medical supervision.

What is semaglutide used for, depending on the brand?

In Ozempic and Rybelsus, semaglutide is used to control glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes, always in conjunction with dietary and physical activity measures. In Wegovy, it is used for weight loss and weight management in specific indications.

This distinction avoids common confusion. Searching for semaglutide for weight loss doesn't always lead to the same medication as searching for semaglutide for diabetes. The active ingredient is the same, but the authorization and context of use are not identical.

How does semaglutide work?

According to the Rybelsus product information, semaglutide reduces blood glucose in a glucose-dependent manner by stimulating insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon secretion when glucose levels are high. A slight delay in gastric emptying in the early postprandial phase is also described.

In the context of weight management, the NHS describes semaglutide as potentially helping to reduce appetite by promoting a feeling of fullness for longer. This explanation aligns with the use of Wegovy within weight management programs.

What adverse effects and precautions should you be aware of?

Gastrointestinal adverse reactions are among the most common with semaglutide medications. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are frequently mentioned in official product information and European regulatory summaries.

Furthermore, the EMA announced in June 2025 that NAION is now considered a very rare adverse effect of semaglutide-containing medicines, including Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy. This is a recent and significant regulatory update.

Can Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy be traded with each other?

Even though they share the same active ingredient, it's not advisable to switch them on your own. The indication, pharmaceutical form, and usage information all change. That's why a healthcare professional checks which one is appropriate in each case.

For the reader, the practical idea is simple. Semaglutide is the name of the active ingredient. Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy are different medications that contain it and are used in different contexts.
