Citalopram and escitalopram are SSRI antidepressants used for depression and certain anxiety disorders. They belong to the same family, but they are not identical. The choice is based on response, medical history, and other treatments, and is made with a clinician.

Citalopram vs escitalopram: relationship between the two

Escitalopram is the S-enantiomer of citalopram, meaning it's one of its two chemical halves. That's why they both act very similarly as SSRIs. Even so, not everyone experiences the same effects, and the doctor may choose one or the other based on tolerance.

For a quick overview, this table summarizes the typical differences between citalopram and escitalopram without going into dosage. It's a general guide, as the specific indication and follow-up depend on your diagnosis and other medications you're taking.

AspectSummary difference

AdjustmentResponse and tolerance vary between individuals.

What are citalopram and escitalopram used for?

Citalopram is indicated for the treatment and prevention of depression, as well as panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Escitalopram is used for depressive episodes and is also authorized for anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia. In both cases, the goal is to relieve persistent symptoms.

In Spain, follow-up usually starts in primary care and, if needed, is coordinated with mental health services. If you want to understand the usual care pathway for depression, it helps to know when referrals happen and what each professional does.

What changes in terms of effects and safety?

In terms of effects and safety, they share typical SSRI precautions and can cause adverse reactions. The product information sheets advise monitoring for specific risks, including QT interval changes in the heart, and avoiding combinations with certain medications. That's why your medication is reviewed before a prescription is issued.

When is the effect noticeable and why does it vary?

In cases of depression and anxiety, the effect is not usually immediate and often takes several weeks to become noticeable. If you decide to discontinue treatment, it is recommended to avoid abrupt stopping, as withdrawal symptoms may occur. A gradual plan, prescribed by a healthcare professional, is the usual approach.

For exact instructions, dosage, contraindications, and possible interactions, please consult the package leaflet and the product information sheet, and follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you are taking other medications.
