Between January and November 2024, the Mental Health Unit of the "Dr. José Daniel Rodríguez Maridueña" Infectious Diseases Hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador, treated 2,273 cases related to mental disorders. These included anxiety, depression, and personality changes, among others. emotional well-being It is key to addressing these problems and preventing the impact of seasonal depression.

Within the framework of the World Day Against Depression, the hospital has organised awareness days aimed at internal and external users. These activities aim to address mental and emotional behaviours, such as loneliness and isolation, common after the December celebrations. Strengthening emotional well-being helps mitigate these effects and improve mental health.

Factors that aggravate seasonal depression

The head of Mental Health, Sorelly Oyague, explained that this set of alterations is known as “seasonal depression.” According to the specialist, the holidays are times of joy for some, but for others they can represent a period of sadness and emotional disturbance.

Oyague said the pressure to not have perfect celebrations can lead to stress and anxiety. These feelings are heightened when the holidays are associated with the loss of loved ones, illness, or economic demands such as shopping, dinners, and travel.

Furthermore, overexposure to social media, which displays ideal celebrations, fosters comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. This, combined with changes in sleep, eating and physical activity routines, seriously affects emotional well-being.

Tips to strengthen emotional well-being and prevent depression

The specialist emphasized that it is crucial to recognize and accept feelings instead of repressing them. Seeking emotional support from friends, family, or professionals can make all the difference. She also suggested practicing self-care through activities such as reading, meditating, walking, and recreation.

Remembering positive aspects of life, strengthening connections with others, and avoiding alcohol or psychotropic substances are essential measures to prevent depression.

Depression, characterized by persistent sadness, hopelessness and loss of interest in activities, can lead to suicidal thoughts. Emotional well-being is a fundamental pillar in the prevention of these problems, and these days seek to raise awareness among the population about its importance, especially in emotionally vulnerable times.
