The Federal Government of Brazil has increased by 34% the budget of the Ministry of Health for specialized treatments between 2022 and 2024. The total amount allocated increased from R$ 54.9 billion in 2022 to R$ 74.7 billion in 2024. This investment, aimed at key areas such as chemotherapy, transplants, hemodialysis and elective surgeries, seeks to improve the quality and scope of services in the Unified Health System (SUS).
Historic increase in SUS
This increase in resources represents the largest growth in the offer of specialized services within the SUS in the last decade. With these funds, the values of the SUS table for hospitals and philanthropic services have been readjusted. The objective is to offer more services and improve the conditions for patients who depend on the public health system.
Greater access to specialized treatments
Minister of Health, Nísia Trinity, stressed that the investment will allow for the largest number of consultations, examinations and surgeries in the history of the SUS. "In 2024, we will reach record numbers in the number of procedures performed," he said. In addition, an increase in the number of specialist doctors serving in the public network is expected.
Strengthening SUS as a government priority
The minister stressed that investments in strengthening the SUS are one of the priorities of President Lula's government. "Since 2023, we are making a great effort to improve the SUS. Our goal is to treat more people and offer better quality of service," explained Nísia Trinity. She also mentioned the progress made in areas such as vaccination and the reduction of waiting times for surgeries.
Specific funds for financing treatments
The increase in the budget is distributed mainly through the Strategic Actions and Production Compensation Fund. This fund finances complex procedures such as chemotherapy, transplants and hemodialysis, as well as highly complex services. Additionally, the Programmed Financing of Medium and High Complexity is subsidized, which includes consultations, elective surgeries and specialized examinations.
A step towards universal health care
The realignment of resources in the SUS is part of a broader strategy to ensure universal access to health in Brazil. The investment seeks to reduce inequalities in access to quality medical services, especially in more vulnerable areas of the country. With this approach, the government hopes to continue advancing in the construction of a more fair and inclusive health system for all Brazilians.
