BiC Awards 2024: The best hospitals and healthcare leaders in Spain

The Illustrious Official College of Physicians of Madrid (ICOMEM) was the setting for the 19th edition of the Best in Class (BiC) 2024 Awards, an event that brings together the Spanish healthcare elite and recognizes excellence in healthcare quality. This November 19, the gala organized by Medical Gazette and the Chair of Healthcare Management and Innovation at the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) highlighted Madrid, Galicia, Catalonia, Andalusia and the Valencian Communityas the most awarded communities.

According to information from Gaceta Médica, among the most notable awards, the Marquis of Valdecilla University Hospital (Cantabria) was recognized as the Best High Complexity Hospital, while the Villalba General University Hospital (Madrid)received the award for Best Medium Complexity Hospital.

Recognition for healthcare excellence

The ceremony was opened by Angel Gil, director of the Chair of Healthcare Management and Innovation at the URJC, who stressed the importance of measuring the quality of care for the benefit of patients. For his part, Santiago de Quiroga, editor-in-chief of Medical Gazette, praised the commitment of professionals and stated that “excellence is not the result of chance, but of effort, dedication and innovation.”

In this edition, the 39 awards given covered categories of medical specialties, regional strategies and innovative projects. Among the most notable awards were:

  • Best Hospital Management in Advanced Therapies: Andalusian Health Department.
  • Best Autonomous COVID-19 Vaccination Plan: Department of Health of the Generalitat Valenciana.
  • Best Rare Disease Strategy: Department of Health of Castilla y León.
  • Best Project for Humanization of Healthcare: Home Psychiatric Hospitalization Unit of the Niño Jesús Children's University Hospital (Madrid).

Madrid, leader in recognitions

The Community of Madrid was the region with the highest number of awards, accumulating 14 awards, highlighting:

  • Gregorio Marañón University General Hospital: Best Schizophrenia Unit, Best Psychiatry Service and Best Oncology Pharmacy Service.
  • Jimenez Diaz Foundation: Best Microbiology, Endocrinology, Hematology and Infection Control Service.
  • 12th of October University Hospital: Best Oncology Service.

Featured Awards by Region

  • Galicia:The Santiago University Hospital Complex shined with awards in Rheumatology and Pediatrics.
  • Catalonia: Vall d'Hebron and Bellvitge stood out in obesity and reprocessing of hospital material, respectively.
  • Andalusia: Led innovative strategies such as One Health and Social Determinants of Health.
  • Valencian Community: La Fe Hospital achieved 5-star accreditation in Hospital Pharmacy and Intensive Medicine.

Innovation and future

The gala not only celebrated current excellence, but also highlighted the importance of healthcare innovation to ensure patient well-being in the future. Companies such as ROVI, Johnson & Johnson and bioMérieuxThey supported the event, showing their commitment to a quality health system.

The BiC Awards 2024 They consolidate the leadership of Spanish hospitals in quality of care, innovation and humanization, reaffirming the central role of healthcare professionals in the development of a benchmark healthcare system.
