The Xunta de Galicia has gathered 1,000 volunteers to participate in the pilot phase of the project Xenoma Galicia. This project aims to compile a large sample of DNA for medical purposes, focusing on the identification of high-risk genetic variants. The goal is to be able to act in time in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of serious diseases, such as breast cancer and hereditary ovarian.
Identification of genetic variants for the prevention of breast cancer
The project will provide crucial information on the risks of developing serious diseases, such as breast cancer. This information will be key to preventing or treating these diseases in a timely manner and with the appropriate treatment. By identifying high-risk genetic variants, professionals will be able to offer more personalized and preventive care.
Operational test for future stages
The pilot phase is not only intended to collect samples, but will also serve as an operational test for the following stages of the project. This initiative is set to transform the way in which the health of Galician citizens is protected. The experience gained in this phase will allow the protocols to be fine-tuned for future actions throughout the community.
Blood samples in 14 public hospitals
Blood samples from this first group of participants will be taken on 14 and 21 December. The process will be carried out simultaneously in the 14 public hospitals of the Galician Health Service. This logistics will ensure that the project is developed efficiently and with a wide geographical coverage.
A representative sample of the Galician population
The project has succeeded in bringing together a diverse group of selected citizens, to form a representative sample of the Galician population. The participants come from different age groups, sexes and environments, both urban and rural. Among them, there are residents of two urban municipalities, four semi-urban ones and nine rural ones.
Opportunity for all selected candidates
All citizens who received a selection message and wish to participate will be able to attend the following calls to take DNA samples. This opportunity will contribute to the creation of a genetic database that will be of great value for the early diagnosis of diseases such as breast cancer.
This project, a pioneer in Galicia, marks a significant step in personalized medicine and in the fight against serious diseases.
