In the framework of World Diabetes Day, the Ministry of Health of Mexico reinforces the call to adopt healthy habits for the prevention of diabetes and reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Mexico, a problem that seriously affects public health.
Prevalence of diabetes in Mexico and the world: A growing problem
Diabetes currently affects 536 million people worldwide, representing 10.5% of the global population. This figure is expected to rise to 783 million people by 2045, reaching 12.2% of the global population.
The prevalence of diabetes in Mexico It is even more alarming. According to the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), in 2018 it was 18.3%, which is equivalent to 14.6 million people affected.
Furthermore, 31.7% of cases remain undiagnosed, a situation that is more common among people under 40 years of age (65.6%) and in low-income populations. Diabetes is now the second cause of death and the main cause of disability in the country.
How to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Mexico?
The Ministry of Health urges overweight people, those with a family history of diabetes or risk factors to undergo a blood glucose test, either at health centers or with a home glucometer.
Changing habits is essential to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in Mexico, especially type 2 diabetes and its complications. Recommendations include:
- Do exercise: Perform at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily.
- Eat a healthy diet: Reduce consumption of sugar, saturated fats and ultra-processed products.
- Avoid tobacco: Do not smoke or consume derivatives.
These measures, together with maintaining an adequate body weight, can significantly prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.
The importance of an early diagnosis
One of the biggest challenges in combating diabetes is early detection. According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT), many people are unaware that they have the disease, especially in vulnerable communities.
The Ministry of Health stressed that going to the doctor to have a blood glucose test is a crucial step, especially for those with a family history or risk factors such as obesity.
On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, authorities stressed the need to strengthen prevention and health promotion strategies to reduce the prevalence of diabetes in MexicoAdopting healthy habits not only improves quality of life, but also helps reduce the risk of developing other chronic diseases.
Advances in Diabetes Control and the Health System in Mexico
Beyond prevention, diabetes control is also advancing with new technologies that optimize its management. An example is the integration between Hedia and Glooko, which facilitates insulin dosing and remote patient monitoring.
In the area of health care, Mexico continues to strengthen its health system. Recently, the National Rehabilitation Institute received a significant investment to improve infrastructure and access to specialized treatments.
In addition, the country continues to develop strategies to strengthen its health and social welfare system. As part of these efforts, the National Development Plan 2025-2030 seeks to improve access to health care and the quality of health services.
