According to the Survey AGES 2024 presented by Health in Spain, Tobacco consumption has decreased by 2.2% compared to 2022 and that of sedatives by 1.1% while occasional cannabis use has increased slightly, although daily consumption is reduced.
The latest Survey on Alcohol and other Drugs in Spain (EDADES 2024), shows that the substances with the highest prevalence of consumption in the last year in the country.
Alcohol consumption
The report indicates that alcohol and tobacco continue to be the substances with addictive potential that are started at the earliest age (16.4 and 16.6 years respectively). Regarding illegal drugs, cannabis is the substance that starts to be used at the earliest age (18.4 years).
Daily tobacco consumption has generally declined. Regardless of age, men smoke more than women. 67.7% of daily tobacco users have considered quitting.
The EDADES 2024 study reflects the stability in occasional alcohol consumption (76.5% of the population aged 15 to 64 have drunk alcohol in the last 12 months in 2024).
As for the intensive consumption of this substance, it is noteworthy that binge drinking continues to decline. In 2024, 14.71 TP3T of this population say they have gotten drunk compared to 16.71 TP3T in 2022.
According to the report, the most widely consumed substances in the last 12 months in our country are alcohol (76.51 TP3T) and tobacco (36.81 TP3T), followed by cannabis (12.61 TP3T) and prescription and non-prescription sedatives (12.01 TP3T). The consumption of cocaine powder and/or base (2.51 TP3T) is much lower, as is the consumption of other substances.
By age, consumption is highest in the 15 to 34 age group. In hypnotics and opioid analgesics, it increases from age 35 onwards.
Regarding gender differences, the data (over the last 12 months) confirm greater consumption among men, except for drugs with addictive potential such as hypnotics and opioid analgesics.
Perception of risk and availability
Women have a higher perception of the risk of addictive substances. The general perception of risk is higher for the consumption of illegal substances, as well as tobacco, sedatives and opioid analgesics. However, it is lower for alcohol consumption.
Accessibility to drugs
In recent years, the perception of availability of various drugs has been much lower than in previous years, as a result of efforts to control supply.
In 2024, the illegal substances perceived as most accessible are cannabis (59.1% of respondents believe they could easily get it within 24 hours) and cocaine (40.6% of respondents).
For other illegal substances, the perception of availability is much lower.
