When pain strikes, we look for fast, effective relief. Two common options are dexketoprofen and ibuprofen. Both are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), but they have key differences.

Ibuprofen is widely used to treat fever, mild to moderate pain, and inflammation. Dexketoprofen, known commercially as Enantyum, is the active enantiomer of ketoprofen. It is characterized by its rapid and potent action.

Why is dexketoprofen gaining popularity over ibuprofen?

In clinical studies, dexketoprofen has shown greater analgesic efficacy in the first hour after oral surgical procedures compared to ibuprofen. Furthermore, in cases of renal colic, intravenous dexketoprofen significantly reduced pain within the first 30 minutes, proving comparable to meperidine and more effective than paracetamol.

On the other hand, the ibuprofen, especially at doses of 800 mg, has demonstrated superior efficacy in managing pain in long-bone fractures at 60 and 120 minutes compared to dexketoprofen. Ibuprofen is available over the counter and is typically used to treat mild to moderate pain.

Instead, the dexketoprofen usually requires a prescription, and is commonly prescribed by an internist or primary care physician, especially in cases of acute pain related to interventions or systemic pathologies.

Dose and duration of effect

Ibuprofen dexketoprofen It is usually administered in doses of 25 mg every 8 hours, with a rapid onset of action, but a duration of effect of approximately 4 to 6 hours.

Ibuprofen ibuprofen It is administered in doses ranging from 400 to 800 mg every 6 to 8 hours, with a slower onset of action but a longer duration of effect.

Side effects and precautions

Both medications can cause gastrointestinal effects, such as irritation or ulcers. However, dexketoprofen could have a slightly better gastric tolerance profile.

It is essential to consult a health professional before starting any treatment, especially in people with a history of gastric, kidney or liver problems.

When should you use dexketoprofen instead of ibuprofen?

  • Dexketoprofen: Ideal for fast relief of acute pain, such as postoperative or renal colic.
  • Ibuprofen: Suitable for longer-term pain, such as muscle injuries or chronic inflammation

The choice between the two will depend on the type of pain, its intensity, and duration. It is always advisable to seek medical advice to determine the most appropriate option.
