When pain strikes, we seek quick and effective relief, but also want to avoid stomach or kidney problems. Two common options in Spain are dexketoprofen and ibuprofen. Both are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and can relieve pain and inflammation, but they are not always used in the same way or for the same purpose.
Ibuprofen is widely used for fever, mild to moderate pain, and common inflammatory conditions. Dexketoprofen, found in brands such as Enantyum, is the active enantiomer of ketoprofen and is associated with a relatively rapid onset of relief in some studies, especially when used for acute pain and for a few days.
Why is Dexketoprofen sometimes chosen over Ibuprofen?
It is usually considered when the pain is acute and you need immediate relief, for example, toothache, menstrual pain, or recent musculoskeletal pain such as lower back pain or a sprain. In these scenarios, the goal is usually to control the peak of the pain and then discontinue treatment as soon as possible.
Official product information and clinical studies describe that the effect can start in around 30 minutes in some cases. Even so, that does not mean it is better for every kind of pain or that it will always be faster than ibuprofen, because the dose, the formulation, whether it is taken with food, and individual factors can all change the result.
What dosage is used and how often is it taken?
In adults, dexketoprofen is usually prescribed as 12.5 mg every 4 to 6 hours or 25 mg every 8 hours, not exceeding 75 mg per day.
In the case of ibuprofen, a typical adult dosage is 400 mg every 6 to 8 hours if needed. However, the maximum daily dose depends on the specific product and its package insert, and for self-medication, it is usually limited to 1,200 mg per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor.
Avoid trying to convert doses between the two and do not combine or alternate two anti-inflammatories on the same day without professional guidance, because it increases the risk of adverse effects and does not usually provide a clear advantage.
Which side effects and precautions matter most?
Both can cause digestive discomfort and, in some cases, gastrointestinal bleeding, especially with high doses or prolonged treatment. They can also affect the kidneys, particularly in cases of dehydration, advanced age, or pre-existing kidney disease, and in some individuals, they may increase cardiovascular risks.
Consult a healthcare professional before taking them if you have had ulcers, kidney or heart problems, asthma sensitive to anti-inflammatory drugs, if you are pregnant at certain times, or if you are taking anticoagulants, corticosteroids, or other drugs that may interact.
When should you use Dexketoprofen instead of Ibuprofen?
Dexketoprofen may be suitable for mild to moderate acute pain of short duration, such as dental, menstrual or recent musculoskeletal pain, when assessed by a professional and there are no contraindications.
Ibuprofen is often used for mild to moderate pain with an inflammatory component or fever, always respecting the interval and the maximum daily dose of the product you have and avoiding prolonging the treatment if the pain does not improve.
Always consult the official leaflet and follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist for dosage, intervals and duration, because the correct use depends on your case and your history.
