The official list price of Mounjaro in the United States is $1,112.16 per prescription, and Lilly defines that prescription as a one-month supply of four pens. Eligible commercially insured patients may pay as little as $25.
What does the price of Mounjaro in the United States include?
That amount doesn't reflect what everyone pays at the pharmacy. Lilly clarifies that the final price depends on insurance, pharmacy charges, and any discounts or financial assistance available to each patient.
The figures published for Mounjaro in the United States may refer to the list price or the actual out-of-pocket cost. The brand's official reference uses the list price per prescription.
How the monthly cost changes with insurance
Mounjaro's savings card can lower the cost to $25 for a one-month or three-month supply of prescriptions, but only for eligible patients with commercial insurance that covers the medication. Government programs are excluded.
The official savings website defines a month as 28 days and four pens. It also defines three months as 84 days and up to 12 pens within the same savings program.
If a person is not enrolled in that program, Lilly indicates they can expect a price close to the list price, plus any applicable pharmacy charges. This is why two patients may receive different quotes for the same prescription.
Is a prescription required, and what is it approved for?
In the United States, Mounjaro is only available by prescription. The FDA prescribing information and official website list it as injectable tirzepatide approved to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes when used in conjunction with diet and exercise.
The FDA's most recent fact sheet maintains that its initial approval in the United States was in 2022. It also indicates that its approved use extends to adults and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with type 2 diabetes.
What to check before requesting a quote
On its official website, Lilly lists the list price, trade discounts, and any applicable pharmacy charges. The pricing page also indicates that the final price paid by the patient at the pharmacy may differ.
