Buscapina is an antispasmodic medicine whose active ingredient is hyoscine butylbromide, also known as butylscopolamine. It is used to ease spasms in the digestive system, the bile ducts, and the urinary tract in adults and in children over six years old. It works by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in smooth muscle, which helps the muscle relax.
It can help relax smooth muscle and relieve pain associated with spasms. It is used for spasms of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, and for spasms and motility disorders of the biliary tract.
How and when should it be taken?
In adults and children over 6 years of age, the recommended dose is 1 to 2 tablets of 10 mg, 3 to 5 times a day. Do not exceed 100 mg per day. Swallow whole with liquid, without chewing.
It is not indicated for children under 6 years of age. Do not take it if you have untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, tachycardia, myasthenia gravis, or benign prostatic hyperplasia. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about your usual medications.
In addition to tablets, there are injectable formulations of butylscopolamine used in healthcare settings. Buscapina Compositum combines butylscopolamine with metamizole, an analgesic, for colic-type pain.
Side effects and precautions
Buscapina may cause dry mouth, increased pulse, and changes in sweating. Urinary retention occurs rarely. If blurred vision or drowsiness occurs, use caution.
In some cases, allergic reactions and difficulty breathing have been reported. If these symptoms occur, stop taking the medication and seek medical advice.
It is recommended to avoid using Buscopan during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using it. Do not use it continuously without knowing the cause of the pain.
This medication does not treat the underlying cause of the pain, but rather relieves its symptoms. Therefore, if abdominal pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, vomiting, or bleeding, you should consult a doctor immediately.
