Wegovy: How this weight-loss treatment works and its price in Spain

Wegovy is a weekly injectable semaglutide treatment for obesity: it reduces appetite, delays gastric emptying, achieves an average weight loss of 15–17%, and its price in Spain ranges approximately between €180 and €300 per month.

Wegovy is the brand name of semaglutide, an injectable once-weekly medication that mimics a hormone which regulates appetite. It belongs to the family of GLP-1receptor agonists, acts on the brain to reduce the sensation of hunger and also slows stomach emptying.

Thanks to this, the patient feels less hungry and is full sooner. The result is usually a sustained reduction in body weight, especially when combined with diet and exercise.

Wegovy is approved by the European Medicines Agency and is supported by international clinical studies. It is not a miracle product, but a medication subject to medical supervision.

Who can take Wegovy and how is it administered?

Wegovy is indicated for adults with obesity and is also prescribed to overweight people who have associated diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea.

Treatment begins with a low dose that is gradually increased over 16 weeks, reaching a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week. The injection is administered in the abdomen or thigh and can be given at home after initial supervision by medical personnel.

It is important to follow the guidelines to reduce the risk of adverse effects. It is not recommended for people with a history of pancreatitis or those with certain inherited endocrine disorders. Your doctor will evaluate each case.

Effectiveness and price in Spain

In STEP 1 clinical trial, sponsored by Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, patients lost an average of about 15% of their body weight after 68 weeks of treatment with diet and exercise. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which usually appear at the beginning and decrease over time. Some people also report fatigue or constipation.

In Spain, Wegovy is not covered by public healthcare. The price per box ranges from €180 to €300, depending on the distributor and region. Each box contains four injections, equivalent to one month of treatment, making it a high-cost treatment.

It is crucial to consult with an endocrinologist before starting treatment. Medical monitoring helps reduce risks. Wegovy is not a quick fix, but rather a tool within a comprehensive approach to weight loss. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains essential, and it is important to always read the package insert and follow the instructions of your doctor or pharmacist.
